However, many small business owners are not sure what qualifies as evergreen content or how to create it. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Evergreen Content?

Evergreen content refers to content that is always relevant to your target audience. For example, if your target audience is female solo travelers, a blog post giving safety tips while traveling would count as evergreen content.

Besides blog posts, evergreen content can also be packaged as:

  • Podcasts
  • Courses
  • Masterclasses
  • Social media posts
  • YouTube videos

On the flip side, content such as news or dated concepts doesn’t count as evergreen content. An example of that is blog posts about news, roundups about findings for a particular year, or stats that are no longer relevant.

Evergreen Content Benefits

Creating evergreen content has so many benefits for business owners.

If you do a good job of creating evergreen content, you may be able to:

  • Attract your target audience to your platform
  • Increase leads and signups
  • Increase the chance of making consistent sales
  • Increase traffic to your website if your content is optimized well

What is a Real Example of Evergreen Content?

Evergreen content will look different from industry to industry. For us, our target audience is women small business owners. So, for our audience, examples of evergreen content are:

Our evergreen content tends to perform better than our other pieces of content because they’re always relevant and can be repurposed and promoted in various ways.

How to Create Evergreen Content

Creating evergreen content is a skill that you can learn no matter where you are in your business journey.

Evergreen content can provide so much value to your audience and so many benefits for your business.

Before you can make money from evergreen content, you need to know how to make it!

Whether you want to outsource your content creation or tackle it yourself, here is how to get started with making evergreen content.

Research Your Target Audience

You can’t make evergreen content for your audience if you don’t know what your audience wants to see. Your target audience is the people who want what you’re selling.

There are a number of ways you can research your target audience.

According to Market Revolution, you can:

  • Do some market research with questionnaires, polls, and forms
  • Interview the people who already buy your products or services
  • Look at who your competitors are selling to and how they’re selling to them
  • Check out your website analytics using Google Analytics

However, there are other ways you can get information about your target audience and what they want.

Akilah Thompkins-Robinson chatted with us about researching your target audience. She recommends checking out Amazon, Facebook groups, and YouTube.

On these platforms, you’ll find a lot of content geared toward your target audience and your target audience’s response to it. Find out what they like, dislike and make a plan on how to improve what’s already out there.

Figure Out the Best Platform

Small business owners sometimes make the mistake of trying to be on all platforms at once and then burn out along the way.

Pick 1-3 platforms that you can commit to putting content on, then start publishing your evergreen content on a consistent basis.

If you already have an engaged audience on YouTube, you may want to prioritize creating evergreen content there. You can then repurpose the content for another platform such as your blog and a social media account such as Instagram.

You’ll also need to figure out what kind of content your audience likes from you on each platform. Shorter YouTube videos may be what your audience likes, but your longer blogs do better on your website. Use that as a guide to help you create the kind of content your audience wants.

Optimize Your Content

Whichever platform you choose, we recommend optimizing your content by using SEO to get it in front of more people.

For example, with YouTube, there are things you can do to optimize your video.

According to HubSpot, some ways you can optimize your YouTube videos include:

  • Using the target keyword in the name of the video file you’re going to upload
  • Categorize your video
  • Add your keyword to the title of the video
  • Use hashtags
  • Tag the video with popular keywords

On the other hand, if you’re trying to optimize your blog posts you need to:

  • Use keywords in your headings, meta descriptions, and throughout the blog
  • Use images and alt text
  • Use short sentences and paragraphs
  • Write a meta description
  • Include internal and external links

Even if your content is a course or a podcast, there are actions you can take to optimize it.

Repurpose Your Content

Once you’ve created evergreen content and published it, it’s time to repurpose it for other platforms.

Let’s look at an example of how to do that.

If you created a YouTube video, you can then take the main points and create a blog post. You can also take snippets of your YouTube video and publish it on YouTube Shorts, Instagram, Facebook, or whatever social media platform you choose. In addition to that, you can take information from the blog post into an email. You can also take key points and publish them on any social media platform.

When you repurpose your evergreen content, you can attract people on various platforms, keep them engaged and possibly make sales.
